“It is with real sadness that we heard that Fred Crouch died last week. He was one of the leading lights in barbel fishing for decades writing the excellent “Understanding Barbel” and his autobiography “Skies of Fire – Rivers of Gold”. He was a key player in the development of the Barbel Society which has grown from a few friends learning about catching barbel to a conservation organisation with the benefit of the fish at its heart. Another gentleman of angling has passed away, and he will be sadly missed by all in the sport.

As a tribute to Fred, Angling Heritage have been given permission by BBC Radio Lancashire to use a recording of Fred made c1988 fishing for barbel on the Kennet which is free in the audio archive. I hope that you will enjoy it and remember one of anglings greats.
