Last Saturday I organised a fish in on Sutton, about 11 anglers turned up to brave the conditions, some I had met before and was a good opportunity to catch up with old friends, others were new and came to see the fishery and what the society was about.

Its a beast of a river the tidal Trent and many were at first daunted by the appearance, I was myself the first time I saw it.

Friday night quite a few came up and stayed in the pub because of the long journey many had travelled, a perfect excuse to meet the new lads for a pint and some lunch and have a nice relaxed chat.

Saturday morning I met the lads who had travelled up early morning at 6 on the river, by this point the weather had turned and was blowing a gale and lashing down with rain, brief introductions saw us all running for cover.

During the day the wind got worse and by early evening it was blowing a right old gale. Fortunately the weather didnt put the fish of and although not everyone caught a couple of the lads did catch barbel to 12lb 7oz while others had chub and bream, some of us got nothing at all.

Those that stayed on for the saturday night soon packed up in the morning, the weather was shocking how any of us had any gear left after that wind I dont know, thankfully everything was nailed down.

About 11 o’clock those left met up on the river for the custom goodbyes and offers to meet up again before the long journey home. I look forward to the next one.
