Anglers Welcome Fracking Climbdown

The Angling Trust has given a warm welcome to this week’s climbdown by the Government which means that fracking will no longer be permitted in National Parks or in water sensitive areas covered by SSSI’s or other special protections.

The fracking companies will also be forced to carry out environmental impact studies before any permission can be granted to drill through the water aquifer for oil and gas. The changes followed amendments to the Infrastructure Bill promoted by the Angling Trust and other wildlife groups which were adopted by the Opposition and eventually conceded by the Government.

Back in March last year the Angling Trust co- authored the report Fit to Frack? in partnership with the CPRE, National Trust, RSPB, Salmon and Trout Association, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust and the Wildlife Trusts.

The report highlighted a lack of regulation around shale gas exploitation which could cause serious impacts for a range of threatened species including birds, salmon and other wildlife. It also raised serious concerns about the impact of drilling and water contamination on some of our most precious natural habitats such as chalk streams. These crystal clear waterways are highly prized by anglers for the quality of their fishing and known to wildlife-lovers as ‘England’s coral reefs’. Some 85% of the world’s chalk streams are found in Southern and Eastern England.

Fit to Frack? called for all protected wildlife areas, nature reserves and national parks to be frack-free zones, for full environmental assessments to be carried out for each drilling proposal, and for the shale gas industry to pay the costs of its regulation and any pollution clean-ups.

Martin Salter, National Campaigns Coordinator for the Angling Trust said:
“We spent a lot of time talking to our sister organisations […]

Severn Rivers Trust – Fish the Magnificent Severn

Fish the Magnificent Severn
If you dream of catching a double-figure barbel or a 20lb zander an event in Worcester could set you on the right track. Some of the country’s top fishermen will be giving an intensive course on how to fish the magnificent Severn.

The River Severn is not only Britain’s longest river but is also one of the most accessible and holds a fantastic head of fish, but many anglers are daunted by the prospect of river fishing or simply don’t know how good it can be.

To help anglers get to grips with the river the Severn Rivers Trust has organised a Fish the Magnificent Severn event in March. Alongside the distinguished speakers there will be stands by fishing organisations and tackle dealers but the big attraction is the chance to listen and talk to some of the country’s finest anglers.

Among the speakers is John Costello – the only angler in history to take a 20lb zander and a 40lb pike (from a non trout water). The zander, taken from the Severn remains the second best ever caught. He has also caught countless double figure barbel to over 15lbs and is the former editor of Barbel Fisher magazine.

Readers of Angling Times and Flyfishing & Flytying will be familiar with another speaker – Dominic Garnett. A coarse and game angling coach with over 25 years’ experience, he is also author of books including Flyfishing for Coarse Fish, Fishing for Dummies and Canal Fishing: A Practical Guide, plus the recently published Tangles with Pike.

There will also be a presentation by angling writer Des Taylor. He is without doubt one of the best known all-round anglers in the UK, having caught a wide range of species […]

Consultations on draft updates to the river basin management plans and draft flood risk management plans are now open for comment.

Consultations on draft updates to the river basin management plans and draft flood risk management plans are now open for comment.

Dear partners and colleagues
The Environment Agency is seeking your views on proposals to improve the water environment and protect communities from flood risk in England.

We would like your input on updates to river basin management plans and flood risk management plans. Once agreed, these plans will shape decisions, direct investment and action and deliver significant benefits for society and the environment.

River basin management plans set out long term objectives for the quality of the water environment. They identify the condition of rivers, lakes and coastal waters and the pressures on them. The plans provide evidence that will help those with an interest in the water environment to agree where improvements can be made.

Flood risk management plans describe the risk of flooding from rivers, the sea, surface water, groundwater and reservoirs. They set out how the Environment Agency, local councils and water companies will work together, with communities, to manage flood risk.

• You can respond to the river basin management plan consultations at: www.gov.uk/government/consultations/update-to-the-draft-river-basin-management-plans

• You can respond to the flood risk management plan consultations at: www.gov.uk/government/consultations/draft-flood-risk-management-plans

These links will also explain how to respond to consultations in river basin districts which cross borders with Scotland and Wales.

The formal closing date for the flood risk management plan consultation is 31 January 2015, while the river basin management plan consultations will run for six months, ending on 10 April 2015.

The Environment Agency is carrying out a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of each plan. The SEA identifies the significant effects that would be associated with implementing the plans.

We welcome your comments online or in writing. We will also be […]
